This holiday season seems busier than ever. With work, school, shopping, the gym, spending time with family and friends, worshiping sometimes takes a back seat. But an easy way to incorporate the Lord in our everyday lives is through gospel music.
Music teaches us the Good News of Jesus Christ
Gospel songs and hymns make our faith memorable. Touching our hearts, our minds, while teaching us scripture. As we worship the Lord together on Sunday service or read the Bible, we’ve already heard page after page of scripture through song.
Worship music fulfills God’s command
Throughout the Bible, scripture teaches us to sing. “I… go around your altar, O Lord, proclaiming thanksgiving aloud,” (Psalm 26:6-7 ESV); “Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody!” (Psalm 98:5 ESV); and “Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!” (Psalm 100:2 ESV).
In the New Testament, Paul urged the Ephesians (and us) to “be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”(Eph. 5:18-20 ESV).
Music enables us to express our love to the Lord
Worshiping through gospel music transforms us, engaging our hearts and minds to God. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might” (Deuteronomy 6:5 NRSV).
In the New Testament, Jesus points back to this same scripture when responding to a lawyer about the greatest commandment, saying, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37 NRSV).
Music connects us to the Lord
Worship music is full of theological text. In fact, the Bible has over four hundred references to singing and commands us to sing fifty times.
Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord
“I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.
“The Lord is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him
The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is his name. Exodus 15:1-3
The Apostle Paul instructed the Colossians, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
From the Heart
Singing allows us to connect with our creator. Worship encourages us, strengthens us, builds us up, convicts us, and even restore us. The gospel music, comedy, testimonials, and biblical teaching, touches our hearts and lives, transforming us in a special way. Filling us with the Spirit and connecting us with our heavenly Father.
